GK9S was established to train service dogs for the Veterans Administration, to pair the service dogs with selected Veterans, and educate Veterans on the service dog’s capabilities. Under contracts with the Department of Defense, Federal agencies, law enforcement, and corporate clients, GK9S began training handlers and canines to perform life-saving missions such as explosive and narcotic detection, law enforcement patrol operations, and prevention of human trafficking.

GK9S currently offers several canine handler career training programs at the 75,000 square foot Canine Cargo Screening Center of Excellence (CCSCE) in Opelika, Alabama. We specialize in canine explosives, narcotics, and COVID detection programs which prepare graduates for success as canine professionals in these areas. By maintaining low student to instructor ratios, we ensure that each student receives ample individual attention and instruction. Canines are trained to produce a passive response upon detection of all trained target odors, and our canine training methodology is a positive reinforcement reward system which supports the canine’s correct response to an imprinted odor. Unlike other methods, our training utilizes only pure odors to ensure effective odor recognition both in training and in the field.  Once our canines and handlers are proficient in a controlled environment, teams are introduced into operational conditions representative of the areas of operation in which they will be expected to conduct searches. By introducing the canine teams to these operational conditions at crucial stages throughout the training process, both the canine and handler gain experience and comfort in effectively searching in a variety of operational settings.
